Can I Get Credit for Skills I Already Have? (RPL & Credit Transfer)

If you have relevant work experience, prior training, or completed units from other qualifications, you may be able to reduce the time it takes to complete your course through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

RPL acknowledges the skills and knowledge you have already gained — through formal and informal training, work experience, or life experience — and maps them against the units of competency in your chosen qualification. Where competency can be demonstrated, you may be granted credit for those units without having to complete them again.

RPL is assessed unit by unit as you progress through your program. The time it takes will depend on how long it takes to collect and collate the necessary evidence and to address any gaps in skills and knowledge.

What is Credit Transfer?

UNE Partnerships recognises qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by UNE Partnerships and other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), in accordance with relevant training package qualification packaging rules and recognition requirements.

Credit is available for any unit of competency that falls within the packaging rules and currency expectations, and is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Credit transfer based on previous education can be assessed prior to enrolment — to apply, you will need to submit an application along with access to your USI (Unique Student Identifier) for verification. Where available, credit will be applied upon completion of other units in your enrolled qualification.

How do I apply for RPL or Credit Transfer?

Contact the Student Services Team to discuss your options. For credit transfer, reach out prior to enrolment and have your relevant certificates, transcripts, or documentation ready.

Can I progress from UNEP qualifications to university study?

Yes. UNE Partnerships qualifications can provide pathways into undergraduate and postgraduate study at the University of New England. For example, UNE's Bachelor of Business offers academic credit to graduates of the Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management. Explore pathways at unep.edu.au/students/pathways-to-une.

Contact the Student Services Team on 1800 066 128 or ask@unep.edu.au to discuss your prior learning and what credits you may be eligible for.
