Can I Get Credit for Skills I Already Have? (RPL & Credit Transfer)
If you have relevant work experience, prior training, or completed units from other qualifications, you may be able to reduce the time it takes to complete your course through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer.
What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
RPL acknowledges the skills and knowledge you have already gained — through formal study, workplace experience, or life experience — and maps them against the units of competency in your chosen qualification. Where competency can be demonstrated, you may be granted credit for those units without having to study them again.
The RPL process involves gathering evidence of your existing competency (such as work samples, references, workplace records, or a portfolio) and potentially a structured conversation or assessment with a trainer.
What is Credit Transfer?
If you have previously completed units of competency through another Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or through UNE Partnerships itself, you may be eligible for direct credit transfer. UNE Partnerships recognises qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by other RTOs, subject to currency requirements and the packaging rules of your chosen qualification.
Credit is applied on a case-by-case basis and is processed upon enrolment after your previous qualifications are verified.
How do I apply for RPL or Credit Transfer?
Notify your Course Advisor at the time of enquiry or enrolment. Bring any relevant certificates, transcripts, or documentation and our Student Services Team will assess your eligibility.
Will RPL or Credit Transfer reduce my fees?
In many cases, yes — if units are credited or waived, you may pay less. Your Course Advisor will confirm the fee impact during the enrolment process.
Can I progress from UNEP qualifications to university study?
Yes. UNE Partnerships qualifications can provide pathways into undergraduate and postgraduate study at the University of New England. For example, UNE's Bachelor of Business offers academic credit to graduates of the Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management. Explore pathways at unep.edu.au/students/pathways-to-une.
